Mysticeti, touted as a breakthrough in consensus protocols, has demonstrated impressive results in testing environments. The algorithm achieves commits within three message delays, which translates to about 500 milliseconds in a wide area network (WAN) testing environment. This represents a significant improvement over the previous Narwhal-Bullshark algorithm, addressing specific latency issues inherent in the system.
One of Mysticeti’s key innovations is its ability to decouple latency from throughput. The algorithm maintains extremely high throughput, even in the face of network and node failures. This resilience is crucial for maintaining consistent performance across the network.
Mysticeti introduces several performance enhancements:
- Reduced consensus rounds: Validators can sign and share blocks without certification, resulting in fewer round-trips than any other DAG-based consensus algorithm.
- Increased throughput without latency increase: By inlining transactions within the primary’s block, Mysticeti delivers high throughput—over 100,000 transactions per second—without significantly increasing latency.
- Earlier transaction commitment: A novel commit rule appoints multiple leaders every round, allowing more transactions to be committed earlier in the process.
The Sui team emphasizes that this is a phased rollout. While some improvements will be noticeable immediately, the full benefits of Mysticeti will become apparent as the upgrade process continues over the next few weeks.
This upgrade is expected to significantly enhance the user experience across all Sui applications, from gaming to DeFi, by enabling lightning-fast transactions. As the rollout progresses, users and developers alike are encouraged to explore the improved performance and stay tuned for further enhancements.
