Beauty contests have a long history, with the earliest known contest dating back to 1825 in Balatonfüred, Hungary. Nearly 200 years later, we welcome a brand-new type of contest: “Miss AI,” the world’s first official and formal artificial intelligence beauty contest.

The contest was announced in April by Fanvue, a social media platform designed for AI models, in collaboration with the World AI Creators Award (WAICA). The judging panel includes two AI-generated influencers, Aitana Lopez and Emily Pellegrini, as well as two human judges, Andrew Bloch and Sally-Ann Fawcett.

AI: THE BIGGEST THREAT TO ‘BEAUTY’?

The contest has sparked widespread discussion, as the emergence of AI models is indeed controversial, particularly within the health and beauty industries, which have long struggled with unrealistic standards and diversity issues.

A UK study last year found that 60% of consumers felt underrepresented in health and beauty advertising—a figure that rises to 79% among those over 55, with 43% preferring ads that feature real users.

Unilever’s Dove brand predicts that by 2025, we will enter an era where 90% of content will be generated by artificial intelligence, with their message remaining: “Keep beauty real.” One-third of women feel pressured to change their appearance due to content they see online, even when they know these images are fake or AI-generated. The rise of AI poses one of the greatest threats to true beauty over the past 20 years.

Nonetheless, the popularity of AI influencers and models in the fashion and media industries seems to be a trend that is set to explode. A 2024 influencer promotion report shows that nearly half of the Gen Z population is interested in brands that have AI influencers.

With the launch of this “Miss AI” beauty contest, we are witnessing a new chapter in AI models within the fashion and beauty industries. This contest is more than just a competition; it is an exploration of future technology and aesthetics.
