CEOs Mark Zuckerberg and Jensen Huang unveil groundbreaking video AI, share personal moments in a lively fireside chat, blending tech innovation with unexpected humor at the Colorado conference.

The SIGGRAPH 2024 conference in Colorado became the stage for both significant technological advancements and unexpectedly entertaining exchanges between two of tech’s most influential figures. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang‘s fireside chat on Monday evolved from a showcase of cutting-edge AI to a series of lighthearted personal exchanges.

The centerpiece of Meta’s presentation was the introduction of Segment Anything Model 2 (SAM 2), a groundbreaking AI model designed for video segmentation. Building upon last year’s successful Segment Anything model, SAM 2 extends advanced segmentation capabilities to video content, marking a significant leap in computer vision technology. Zuckerberg highlighted the model’s potential applications, stating, “Scientists use this stuff to study coral reefs and natural habitats. But being able to do this in video and have it be zero-shot and tell it what you want, it’s pretty cool.”

In line with Meta’s commitment to open AI, SAM 2 will be released as an open-source model, accompanied by a large, annotated database of 50,000 videos for training purposes. Zuckerberg explained the rationale behind this approach: “This isn’t just like a piece of software that you can build — you need an ecosystem around it. It almost wouldn’t even work that well if we didn’t open source it.”

As the conversation shifted from AI capabilities to personal territory, the CEOs engaged in unexpected banter. Zuckerberg presented Huang with a custom-made black leather and shearling jacket, joking, “It’s a vibe. I mean, get this guy a chain.” Huang reciprocated by gifting Zuckerberg a leather jacket his wife had bought for the occasion.

The hour-long chat was peppered with surprising moments, including mentions of Zuckerberg’s Hawaiian ranch and cow-raising endeavors, alongside an unexpected F-bomb drop. Huang, perhaps emboldened by Meta’s reliance on Nvidia’s hardware, playfully teased Zuckerberg about his recent style makeover and quipped that he “needs an AI that doesn’t judge.”

A particularly amusing anecdote involved Zuckerberg’s meticulous tomato-slicing habits during a dinner at Huang’s house, leading to a humorous exchange about Zuckerberg’s request for second helpings of cheesesteak.

Despite the jovial atmosphere, the conversation touched on serious topics related to AI and technology. Both CEOs shared insights into their companies’ strategies and the future of AI in their respective fields, demonstrating the rapid pace of innovation in computer vision and machine learning.

The chat concluded on a complimentary note, with Huang praising Zuckerberg’s physique and Zuckerberg reciprocating the sentiment. This unconventional interaction provided a refreshing glimpse into their personalities beyond their professional roles, showcasing that even at high-level industry events, there’s room for humor and genuine human connection.
