Justice Department reveals a sophisticated network of nearly 1,000 AI-generated fake accounts spreading pro-Russian disinformation. The operation, linked to Russian state media RT, used advanced software to create authentic-appearing social media personas.

In a significant cybersecurity operation, US officials and their allies have successfully dismantled an artificial intelligence-powered Russian bot farm operating on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The network, comprising nearly 1,000 fake accounts, was dedicated to spreading disinformation and pro-Russian sentiments.

The Justice Department revealed that the sophisticated scheme was orchestrated by a digital media department within RT, a Russian state-controlled media outlet. The operation’s development, initiated in 2022, was reportedly led by RT’s deputy editor-in-chief and received approval and funding from an officer at Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), the primary successor to the KGB.

Central to this operation was a tool called “Meliorator,” capable of mass-producing authentic-appearing social media personas, generating text messages and images, and mirroring disinformation across the bot network. US authorities, in collaboration with Dutch intelligence and Canadian cybersecurity experts, detailed the tool’s capabilities in a cybersecurity advisory.

As part of the takedown, two domains used to create email addresses for account registration on X were seized. These email accounts were crucial in bypassing X’s security measures, as the bots could copy-paste one-time passwords (OTPs) to log in. The Justice Department is currently working to identify all 968 accounts involved in the operation, with X cooperating by sharing information and suspending identified accounts.

Many of the AI-generated profiles impersonated Americans, using American-sounding names and claiming US locations. The bot accounts often shared and amplified pro-Russian content, including videos of Russian President Vladimir Putin justifying actions in Ukraine and promoting a “New World Order.”

While this particular operation was confined to X, authorities noted plans for expansion to other platforms. The use of AI in disinformation campaigns marks a significant evolution in foreign influence operations, which have long exploited social media to spread false information.

FBI Director Christopher Wray emphasized the seriousness of the threat, stating, “Russia intended to use this bot farm to disseminate AI-generated foreign disinformation, scaling their work with the assistance of AI to undermine our partners in Ukraine and influence geopolitical narratives favorable to the Russian government.”

This incident underscores the growing intersection of artificial intelligence and disinformation campaigns, presenting new challenges for cybersecurity experts and social media platforms in safeguarding against sophisticated, AI-powered influence operations.
