YouTube has taken a significant step in addressing the growing concern of AI-generated content by updating its privacy policies. The new guidelines, quietly implemented in June, allow individuals to request the removal of AI-generated videos that simulate their appearance or voice.
The Alphabet-owned platform’s updated privacy guidelines state, “If someone has used AI to alter or create synthetic content that looks or sounds like you, you can ask for it to be removed.” This policy change comes as a response to the increasing prevalence of deepfakes and other AI-generated content that can potentially infringe on personal privacy and identity rights.
However, the removal process is not automatic. YouTube will give content uploaders a 48-hour window to remove the content themselves before initiating a review. The platform will consider several factors in determining whether to remove a video, including whether the content is disclosed as altered or synthetic, whether the person can be uniquely identified, and whether the content has parody, satire, or other public interest value.
Importantly, YouTube requires “first-party claims,” meaning only the person whose privacy is being violated can file a request, with some exceptions for legal representatives, parents or guardians, and close relatives of deceased individuals.
This policy change is part of a broader effort by YouTube to address the challenges posed by AI-generated content. The platform has previously announced measures to enable music partners to request removal of content mimicking artists’ voices and introduced labeling requirements for AI-generated content.
While working to mitigate potential negative impacts, YouTube is also exploring the creative possibilities of AI. The platform is reportedly in talks with major music labels to license their music for AI tools that can create music, although previous efforts in this direction have faced challenges.
As AI technology continues to advance, platforms like YouTube face the complex task of balancing innovation, creator rights, and user protection. This new policy represents a step towards addressing these challenges, but the effectiveness of its implementation remains to be seen.
